| A Vitrine de Curiosidades deste mês destaca uma obra de Manuel de Faria e Sousa intitulada
Epitome de las Historias Portuguesas, Dividido en Quatro Partes (Adornado de los retratos de sus Reyes com sus principales hazañas), a qual, embora editada em Lisboa em 1628, só viria a ser publicada quarenta e nove anos depois, a título póstumo, em Bruxelas. Ao longo das suas trezentas e oitenta e sete páginas, a pena do autor – profícuo historiador, poeta, epistológrafo, crítico literário e polígrafo de ofício, considerado um dos homens mais eruditos e talentosos do seu tempo – descreve histórias da História de Portugal e façanhas dos seus reis, não deixando de parte a generosidade do seu clima, as riquezas do seu solo, nem esquecendo o arrolar dos seus precedentes ilustres escritores. Seguindo a tendência da corrente historiográfica em vigor, a sua narrativa, ornamentada com a mais aprumada retórica, semelhante à de Gaspar Frutuoso ou à de Leitão de Andrade, enaltece, como garante do prestígio de um passado longínquo, os feitos e as glórias dos antepassados. Escrita num século em que, nas diferentes nações europeias – decorrente do gosto do público por romances de cavalaria e por literatura de viagens –, se desenvolveu um mercado de imaginários e de mitologias vernáculas, esta epítome pretendia cumprir o desígnio de renovar o prestígio cultural de Portugal. Ainda que escrita em castelhano, porque em período de União Ibérica, as expressões de sentimento antifilipino e de autonomia nacional nela contidas levaram a que Manuel de Faria e Sousa fosse denunciado à Inquisição Espanhola. Embora as acusações não tenham sido atendidas, viu-se obrigado a fixar residência em Madrid, cidade onde acabaria por falecer, a 3 de junho de 1649. Esta peça integra a Biblioteca do Centro de Documentação do Museu de Angra do Heroísmo. |
